APPGs meet with Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands
Today, Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on HIV/AIDS, Global Tuberculosis, and Malaria and NTDs met with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria's new executive director, Peter Sands.
During the closed roundtable discussion, Mr Sands presented the investment case for the forthcoming replenishment and spoke of the Global Fund's work in tackling the three diseases globally.
The French Government will be hosting the sixth replenishment conference in Lyon, France on 10 October 2019. The Global Fund estimates that it will need to raise at least USD $14 billion to reach its strategy targets and contribute to the global effort to end TB by 2030. The Global Fund's full investment case can be found here.
Since its founding in 2002, the Global Fund has helped save over 27 million lives around the world. In 2017 alone, Global Fund supported programmes treated over 5 million people with TB. The UK has consistently been one of the Global Fund's most supportive donors, pledging £1.2 billion at the last replenishment conference in 2016.
At the UN High-Level Meeting on TB last year, Member States agreed to mobilise at least USD $13 billion per year to fund TB programmes globally. Currently, the Global Fund provides around 70% of all international financing for TB programmes.
