Global TB Caucus

A unique global network of parliamentarians

For World TB Day 2014, the APPG TB launched a Statement with the intention of building support from parliamentarians across the G7.  The response was overwhelming and more than 160 MPs added their names to the call for renewed efforts to end TB.

From this initiative, a meeting between Nick Herbert MP and Jose Castro, Executive Director of the Union, led to an attempt to host the first Global TB Summit in 108 years.  The Summit was held in Barcelona and attended by representatives from 5 continents, including the Health Minister for South Africa, Aaron Motsoaledi. Delegates at the Summit agreed to establish a Global TB Caucus and launched the Barcelona Declaration.

The Global TB Caucus is a unique global network of parliamentarians united by their shared commitment to end the TB epidemic.  Led by its members for its members, the Caucus aims to transform the response to TB through targeted interventions at national, regional, continental, and global levels. The Caucus is now co-chaired by Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health for South Africa, and Nick Herbert MP.  Under their leadership, the network has grown to one of the world's largest parliamentary networks with 2,300 members in more than 130 countries.
